A real Italian in Hamburg

A real Italian in Hamburg_food_01

The art of cooking he learnt from his 3 aunts in Trentino many many years ago while sitting in the kitchen, watching the three women preparing real italian food. I’m talking about Mario Zini the owner of the restaurant “La Scala” in Hamburg. This italian man originally from nearby the Lago di Garda established in the past 20 years a hotspot for italian cuisine up in the north of Germany. He never aimed to be one of the posh places in town, but rather he always wanted to convince with real italian food, passion about food & wine and authenticity in being an entertaining host. The food served is not very much bling and blang with complicated names and combinations, but rather a kind of cuisine which would delight any italian Mama! The daily changing menue varies in fish and meat, is simple but still very refined.

There is no typical wine list, but I can truely assure you, that Marios wine cellar offers the best italian wines and not only italian, but also german wines, french and overseas. Mario knows a story related to almost any wine he could offer, and you will not miss the wine list at all, because relating to the food ordered and your preferences in grapes and destination countries, the friendly italian will always find the perfect fit for you. You should definitely try out the filled homemade pasta and the sea bass in salt crust. La Scala is a typical family business with Piera the lady of the house behind the bar and Lisa, the daughter helping her father once in a while doing the table service. Delicious are also the cookies served for coffee – homemade obviously and very addictive.

The italian restaurant La Scala is just like Hamburg – delicious, fascinating by understatement and simply adorable.
